Storytelling and Metaphor have been used though the ages to convey knowledge and inspire change. A few well-chosen phrases, a brief allegory, or a creative tale can bring about remarkable and lasting transformation.
The workshop will cover:
Gathering and Organizing Information from the Client This material will provide the content with which to form your teaching tales or therapeutic metaphor. You will learn how to individualized stories for the unique needs of each of client.
Designing Teaching Tales or Metaphors Participants will learn a number of frameworks for creating powerful and captivating teaching stories and multi-level healing metaphors.
Presenting Healing Stories or Metaphors Participant will learn how to tell stories and metaphors for maximum impact. You will also learn to use both verbal and non-verbal communication to create meaningful therapeutic shifts for your clients. Using metaphors can gracefully and respectfully facilitate multi-level change that can impact the client’s cognitive, behavioral, and emotional life.
Your training will consist of lecture-demonstrations and practice exercises in pairs and triads. Participants will work with colleagues until the use of healing metaphors becomes a comfortable alternative approach in your practice.
Therapeutic Metaphors and Teaching Tales can create profound and lasting changes; often in a single session. Notably, the use of stories and metaphors is respectful of the client’s integrity, and encourages her/him to use their own personal history and resources.
Dr. Erickson’s genius was his ability to generate specific, often brief stories matched to the patterns of the client’s problem with a powerful solution attached. These therapeutic narrative metaphors and stories enable the client to generate a new response to old problems based on the information included in the metaphor without exerting a lot of conscious effort. You will learn the underlying patterns he used to create and deliver healing stories
