Bbh electronic medical records project
In January 2010, BBH marked the completion of a multi-year technology project, implementing electronic medical records in all modalities for a completely paperless patient record.
In 2004, BBH’s Board of Directors decided that electronic health records would help achieve the organization’s goal of providing the highest quality of care to underserved populations. Therefore the BBH EMR Project was written into the organization’s strategic plan and business plan. Six years later, in January 2010, BBH proudly completed the project on schedule.
The EMR at BBH uses comprehensive software that fully accommodates the needs of our Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Medical and Housing Programs by providing integrated modules allowing documentation in a wide array of areas. Modules include Standard Documentation, Treatment Plans, Medical, Financial and Reports & Outcomes. It also reminds providers when a patient is due for preventive services or lab tests, alerts them about allergies and will soon provide alerts for drug interactions. The all-inclusive EMR has made using paper charts obsolete; paper medical records are now a thing of the past at BBH.
Using EMR, clinical providers have remote access to a patient’s complete medical record, allowing them to respond to patient health concerns from any location on campus, at any time of day. When meeting with a patient, providers can view the EMR in virtual real time allowing them to make a more accurate assessment. Clinical has instant access to other department’s records and vice versa. The EMR creates an environment where all departments are easily cognizant of each other’s treatment plan, progress and the needs of each patient. This leads to a more structured and streamlined approach in assisting patients with ultimately bettering themselves and improving their quality of life.
BBH is helping to reduce health disparities in areas such as diabetes, asthma, cancer and other chronic health diagnoses experienced by the typical patient. Providers are able to track health outcome goals for their patients with data reports extracted from the EMR. They use the data to improve the level of care they give every day, allowing BBH to have a greater impact on the health of the community, one patient at a time.
EMR also facilitates the timely care so critical in situations that can ultimately be lifesaving. Clinicians can immediately identify critical situations based on previously assessed medical history by accessing EMR. Patients are directed immediately to the appropriate level of care (ASU or ER). Lifesaving decisions are sometimes made because vital information is readily available. The BBH EMR Project has transformed the way health care is delivered at BBH.
